Historic vs. Historical

Historic and historical are used in slightly different ways. Historic means ‘famous or important in history’, as in a historic occasion, whereas historical means ‘concerning history or historical events’, as in historical evidence. (Oxford Dictionary)

Historic

1) A historic place is important because it is old and interesting or impressive:
2) A historic event or time will be recorded in history because it is very important

  • In his book, Churchill describes that historic first meeting with Roosevelt.
  • One of the most important historic moments was when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
  • The restoration work on 3 historic buildings in my neighbourhood will start in May.

Historical

1) connected with history or with the past
2) connected with history as a subject of study

  • The main character in the film is based on a real, historical figure.
  • 'War and Peace' is a historical novel.
  • If you want to understand the conflict you must put it in its historical context.
